The Designer

My passion for gardens and plants began as a child and has been gathering pace ever since. I have enjoyed gardening both indoors and outside, in UK and overseas over several decades. A recent opportunity to crystallise my knowledge with recognised qualifications has rewarded me with a BTEC in Horticulture and Garden Design (distinction), a City and Guilds in Garden Design (merit) and the RHS Advanced Certificate.

The Service

Help with complete garden design, or modification of small sections within the garden can be provided at various levels, with specific attention to design detail, the use of complementary materials and the overall creation of unity and proportion. Advice on sites, plants and planting schemes is offered. Concept plans, planting plans and maintenance schedules are drawn up as required. Sourcing of contractors and suppliers can be undertaken, as can the availability of unusual plants.

The Design Process

I ask you to fill in a detailed questionnaire, this focuses your mind on what you already have and what you would like and reminds me, during the design stages, of the detailed brief. A personal visit to your garden enables me to get the feel of the project and the possibilities of the site, both within and outside its boundaries, enabling me to give a quote for the work required. A site survey identifies the area, noting what needs to be retained and the location of various elements within the boundary. A full Concept Plan to scale is drawn up, showing the outline shapes of the design and its elements. A detailed Planting Plan of planted areas, also to scale, is drawn up showing the different plant specimens and numbers of each required. A Maintenance Schedule for the upkeep of the plants is prepared. Assistance can be provided with appointing a contractor, as well as the sourcing of the specialized plants.
